Identifying bugs
How do I identify a bug?
Snap a photo of the bug in BugWiz, or pick one from your photo library. BugWiz shows the most likely match with its name and an “Is it dangerous?” badge. Your first identification is free.
How do I get the best identification?
- Fill the frame with the bug, in sharp focus.
- Use good light, ideally daylight, without harsh shadows.
- Add another angle: you can send up to three photos of the same bug in one identification, for example from above and from the side.
- Keep a safe distance, and never touch or move a bug to get a better shot.
It says “Hmm, no bug here”.
The photo may not show a bug clearly. Take another photo closer, so the bug fills the frame, with less background and better light. BugWiz names insects, spiders and other bugs only, not people, pets or objects.
The result is wrong. What can I do?
Tap “Not quite? Pick the right match” on the result screen and choose the right bug. That tells our identification provider, Kindwise, that the first answer was wrong, which helps improve identifications. If none fits, try a sharper photo or add another angle.
Can BugWiz tell me if a bite or sting is serious?
No. BugWiz gives general guidance, not medical advice, and it doesn’t diagnose bites or stings. If you’re bitten or stung and feel unwell, contact a doctor or poison control. In an emergency, call your local emergency number. Identifications can be wrong, so never handle a bug based on the app’s answer.
BugWiz Pro
How many free identifications do I get?
Your first identification is free. BugWiz Pro gives you unlimited identifications for everyday use (fair use: up to 20 an hour and 60 a day), which keeps the service fast for everyone.
How do I cancel my subscription or free trial?
Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and choose BugWiz. To avoid being charged, cancel at least 24 hours before your trial or current period ends. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel a subscription.
I paid but BugWiz still shows the paywall.
Tap Restore on the paywall, or Restore purchases in Me (the person button at the top of the Home screen), using the same Apple Account you bought with. If it still doesn’t work, write to us with the form below.
How do I get a refund?
Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Your data
Who is BugWiz for?
BugWiz is for people 18 and over only. It’s rated 18+ on the App Store.
Do I need an account?
No. The app never asks for your name or email. Your bug album, streak, XP and lesson progress are stored on your device and, while “Sync with iCloud” is on in Me, in your own private iCloud, so they come with you to a new iPhone or your iPad. We can’t see that copy.
Does BugWiz use my location?
Only if you turn on “Use my rough location” (on the photo consent screen, or in Me). The app rounds it to about 10 km and sends it with your photos to help identify the bug. Our server doesn’t keep it. You can turn it off at any time in Me, or in your iPhone’s Settings.
How do I delete my data?
Tap Me (the person button at the top of the Home screen), then Delete my data. This erases what our server keeps for your app and the BugWiz data on your device and in your iCloud, and asks our identification provider, Kindwise, to delete your identifications too. It doesn’t cancel a subscription (see above). Read more in our Privacy Policy.
Bitten or stung? If you feel unwell, contact a doctor or poison control right away. In an emergency, call your local emergency number. In the US, Poison Help is 1-800-222-1222.
